British researchers are sounding the alarm

More and more beauty salons around the world are adopting the new method of exfoliation and pedicure with Garra rufa fish, known as "fish - doctors"…

However, new research by the British Center for the Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture is sounding the alarm about the bacteria associated with these fish.

As part of their investigation, British inspectors carried out checks with consignments of Garra rufa fish originating from Indonesia and destined for beauty salons.

Examinations have shown that these fish carried strains of several bacteria that can cause skin infections in people with open wounds, cuts, or worsen the health of people with weakened immune systems due to AIDS or other diseases.

In addition, scientists have found that these strains are resistant to many drugs.

"Our research has identified certain species of bacteria that are associated with these fish and can cause infections in both humans and fish," said study leader Dr. David Verner-Jeffreys.

"Water," he added, "is a fertile ground for the growth of bacteria, with the result that even a small cut carries risks of immediate infection."

In the US, ten states have banned fish pedicures, arguing that it is difficult to clean aquariums, exclude bacteria and maintain good fish health.
