The Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Nikos Kougialis co-authored the reform of the EU Common Agricultural Policy in Brussels, where he participated in the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting, held on 16 and 17 December.

According to an official announcement, the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council yesterday adopted the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which was ratified today by the President of the Council, Minister of Agriculture of Lithuania Vigilijus Jukna, assisted by Mr. Kougiali and the Ministers of Agriculture of Denmark Dan Jorgensen, Poland Stanislaw Kalemba and Ireland Simon Coveney.

The ratification of the CAP reform took place in a special ceremony held in Brussels. With this signature, the Lithuanian Presidency completes the process started in 2011 during the Polish Presidency, which was successfully continued by the Danish, Cypriot and Irish Presidencies, on the basis of which a political agreement was reached on all the CAP reforms by the European Parliament. .

This reform sets the new regulatory framework for the CAP for the next seven years and aims to strengthen the European agricultural sector to take advantage of the opportunities and challenges ahead.

The main objectives of the new CAP are to make agricultural policy greener and better targeted, with a fairer distribution of financial support to farmers across the EU and a more effective rural development policy.
