AKEL elected new members today in the Secretariat of the Central Committee and the Politburo.

According to AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou, four of the members of the Secretariat of the Central Committee and five members of the General Assembly announced their desire to leave.

Also, the Parliamentary Representative of AKEL Nikos Katsouridis expressed the desire to leave this position from the moment he would leave the General Assembly and the Secretariat of the JV.

Based on these data, the Central Committee discussed candidacies for both the Politburo and the Secretariat and through a secret ballot has reached the following results.

New members of the General Assembly who have been voted for by the JV are George Loukaidis, Toumazos Tselepis, George Georgiou, Chrystalla Antoniou and Christos Christofidis.

Regarding the Secretariat of the Central Committee, which was elected because its members come from the General Assembly, the people who have been voted by the Central Committee are Nikos Ioannou, George Loukaidis, Stefanos Stefanou and Neoklis Silikiotis.

On the issue of the Parliamentary Representative, the JV "respected the wish of Nikos Katsouridis and has relieved him of these duties," said Mr. Kyprianou.

He added that the JV will decide who will be the new Parliamentary Representative in a session that will convene on January 3, while until then Andros Kyprianou himself and the Deputy Parliamentary Representative of the party Stavros Evagorou will exercise these duties.

In his statements, Mr. Kyprianou said that the plenary session of the JV has completed a discussion that started in the party bodies since last June, when the discussion at the Secretariat of the JV began "regarding whether we would proceed decisively to the renewal in order to to answer some questions raised by the grassroots party organizations but also by the demands of society itself ".

"The process of renewal is continuous and we believe that it strengthens the party's ability to respond more effectively to the challenges," continued Mr. Kyprianou.

He added that with this reasoning of the renewal and taking into account how the party could deal with some other issues, the exchange of views at the level of the Secretariat began.

Subsequently, the discussion extended to the Politburo and today the process in the Central Committee was completed.
"Through the reflection developed in the Secretariat and the Politburo, it was decided to have changes at three levels. First and foremost in the PG itself where five members of the PG announced their decision to leave, giving the opportunity to proceed with a partial renewal of the PG. At the recent congress of the party in 2010 we had a big renewal in the General Assembly, around 50% of its members and today it is expanding with five new members ", explained the General Secretary of AKEL.

He also said that four of the members of the Secretariat of the JV announced their desire to leave the body, giving the opportunity to new executives to take up their post. Also, Nikos Katsouridis expressed the desire to resign from the position of Parliamentary Representative.

Mr. Kyprianou thanked the executives who are leaving the Secretariat and the General Assembly, namely Fani Christodoulou Venizelos Zannetos, Nikos Katsouridis, Giannakis Kolokasidis and Nikos Petrou, saying that "they have contributed decisively to AKEL reaching the point where it is today. consciousness of the Cypriot society ".

At the same time, he stated that they will continue their offer to the party from different positions.

It is noted that the Politburo consists of 19 people and the Secretariat of the JV of 7.

Mr. Kyprianou also stated that the program conference of AKEL will be held in February and will deal with the positions of the party, while answering questions, he clarified that there is no question of electing a new Secretary General of AKEL.
