The new timetable brings the schools up and down

The decisions for the abolition of the Unified Lyceum have already been taken and as it is known, the new type of school will be introduced next September. An issue that remains pending, however, is the amendment of the existing legislation, in order to be in line with the new data. On this issue, the competent Ministry has been criticized, mainly by the opposition.

Nevertheless, with statements, the Minister of Education, Costas Kadis, announces that the relevant amendments are ready and will be forwarded to the Parliament very soon. He estimates that they will be voted next fall, with the resumption of the work of the legislature.

Asked to comment on the fact that the new high school will be implemented before the legislation changes, he replies that the amendments have to do with procedural issues. He also mentions that they affect provisions which e.g. concern the exams that will take place in June 2016.

However, at first glance, the operating regulations of secondary schools show that there are several changes that need to be made to them. The main ones concern the examined courses, but also the transfers of students.

Below are some examples, based on what is provided in the existing regulations:

1 "Students who are promoted from the A 'to the B' class of the Technical School and follow branches of theoretical direction, can enroll in the B 'Class of the Unified Lyceum without a qualifying examination".

-Based on the new system, obviously the candidate student will have to attend qualifying exams, in the courses of the direction he wishes to follow in the new Lyceum.

2 "Students who are promoted from the A 'to the B' Class of the Technical School and follow branches of practical direction, can enroll in the B 'Class of the Unified Lyceum after a qualifying written examination in all the examined subjects of the A' class of the Unified Lyceum…".

-The specific provision needs to be modified, since now, in the A 'Lyceum, the students choose "group of orientation courses" and consequently the examined courses are not the same for everyone.

3 "Students who remain stationary in the XNUMXnd or XNUMXrd Grade of the Unified Lyceum and re-enroll in these classes, have the right to change course or courses of direction or interest and / or enrichment, provided that their new options are allowed based on the curriculum they have covered successfully up to that school period ".

In this case, too, the regulation must be changed, since the change of direction presupposes qualifying examinations.

4 "The courses that are examined in writing at the end of the year for the students of the high school cycle are… In the XNUMXst Grade Modern Greek, Mathematics, History and Physics. In the XNUMXnd and XNUMXrd Grade, Modern Greek, Mathematics and two of the direction courses of the student's choice… ".

Regarding the XNUMXst Grade, with the introduction of the orientation course groups, the students will be examined in the respective courses. In the XNUMXnd and XNUMXrd Grade of the new Lyceum, students will now be examined in five instead of four subjects, depending on the direction of their choice.

In the same class but… in a different type of Lyceum

According to the regulations, students who remain stationary are required to repeat the same class. In the case of the children who did not manage to be promoted to the XNUMXnd Lyceum, this year, things will be a little different. And this, because in September, the orientation groups are introduced in the XNUMXst Grade, which they have to repeat.

A relevant circular was sent to the schools, which emphasizes the following: "Students who are required to repeat the school year, according to the operating regulations of public secondary schools, due to incomplete attendance or due to performance, as well as students who did not enroll in the Technical Schools due to the limited number of places, they will have to be informed about the new timetable and to enroll in the A 'Lyceum ".

Specifically:
a) Stagnant high school students should be informed by the teachers of Counseling and Vocational Education and choose orientation courses.
b) The students of the Gymnasiums who did not secure a place in a Technical School, should be informed on the one hand about the school in which they will attend during the new school year and on the other hand about the new timetable. Next, they must choose one of four orientation course groups.

According to the Ministry, students who fall into the above categories must register and at the same time declare their choices by June 25th.
