Legislation that will regulate the circulation of two-wheeled and three-wheeled electric machines until next March was requested by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, the Parliamentary Committee on Transport.

The problems discussed by the lack of legislation for the circulation of these electric motors, especially in the tourist areas, as well as the problems created by the circulation of four-wheeled motorcycles (pigs) were discussed in the Commission today.

After the meeting of the Committee, its President George Prokopiou spoke about an uncontrollable situation in relation to electric motors, since there is no legislation for their use and circulation.

"Unfortunately, it is a risk of death for drivers and pedestrians in particular. "These lead them to sidewalks, bike paths and normal roads, which are normally forbidden," he said.

He said that the Ministry of Transport has been instructed to take on a coordinating role together with the other Ministries involved and the competent bodies, so that by next March they will bring a legislation that will determine all this. As he said, the age at which these vehicles are allowed to drive should be determined, since they drive up to 12-15 and 16 years old, without knowing the traffic rules. He also said that there is no security for them, while it has not been clarified where they are allowed to be led. He added that the legislation should come so that the Police know what to do.

The legislation in other countries, as Mr. Prokopiou mentioned, either prohibits them completely, or allows them in some areas inside the airports, while in other countries they are allowed for specific routes.

Regarding four-wheeled motorcycles, Mr. Prokopiou said that there is legislation that prohibits them from traveling on normal roads, because they develop speeds of up to 45 kilometers.

"Unfortunately, they circulate everywhere and we see them every day and unfortunately we had a lot of accidents and in five years we had 7 dead and 37 injured," he said.

In this case, he added, instructions were given to the Police in order to carry out stricter controls, especially regarding the areas that are in circulation. These four-wheeled vehicles, as he said, are allowed to travel only on certain rural roads.

AKEL MP Christakis Tziovanis stated that although the problems related to the circulation of bicycles and tricycles were discussed during the previous parliamentary term and more than a year has passed since the meeting of the competent Parliamentary Committee and the instructions given to the competent Ministry to create a legislative framework which will regulate the use of these electric motors, no substantial steps have been taken in this direction.

AKEL, he said, again asked the Ministry to assume the role of coordinator and within a reasonable time to submit to Parliament special legislation to regulate the issue. He said that the competent ministries were asked to set the age limit for the use of electric motors, the categories in which these motors should be divided on the basis of the speed at which they develop, as well as the definition of the road network in which are circulating.

In relation to four-wheeled motorcycles, he called for the intensification of policing to deal with the problems that arise in their use, but also for the acceleration of the submission of the specific legislation, which will impose a technical control on them.
