Those who wanted to have sex reassignment surgery had to undergo the operation

Sweden will compensate transgender people who were forcibly castrated before undergoing gender reassignment surgery. According to the bill brought by the center-left government in the country's Parliament, those men and women who were forced to undergo compulsory sterilization, in order to be allowed to undergo gender reassignment surgery, will receive compensation of approximately 24.000 euros.

Until 2013, it was mandatory in Sweden for those wishing to undergo gender reassignment surgery to undergo sterilization.

According to Reuters, it is estimated that about 800 citizens will receive the compensation.

Sweden, although considered a model country against discrimination, has a dark history dating back to around 1930, when Roma living in the country underwent forced sterilization in order to maintain the racial purity of the Swedes.

About 63.000 people - most of them women - were sterilized between 1953 and 1975, according to official figures from the Swedish state.

In several European countries, including Greece, sterilization is still considered necessary in order to recognize someone's right to gender reassignment, according to Transgender Europe.
