MEASURES ARE TAKEN FOR THEIR PROTECTION, SAYS THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE

Lack of respect for motorcyclists is one of the most important causes of road accidents involving motorcyclists, said on Tuesday the Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nikolaou, saying that measures are being taken.

He spoke after a meeting at the Ministry with the President of the Non-Governmental Organization Reaction Mario Stavrou, the General Secretary of the Cyprus Motorcycle Federation Argyris Hatzipakko and representatives of the Police. As the Minister said, "unfortunately we have not yet learned to show respect to those around us", as the Cypriot driver does not show the required respect to motorcyclists, but also to cyclists.

Various measures are being taken
According to Mr. Nikolaou, "various measures are being taken in the context of the effort to prevent traffic violations", while specific actions have been identified, which can contribute to the protection of motorcyclists.

Among other things, the Minister referred to issues of education, the measures taken to make the roads more friendly to drivers, but also the specifications for the safety equipment of motorcyclists. The participants in the meeting also discussed issues of modernization of legislation, especially with regard to penalties, and as the Minister of Justice and Public Order said, both the Federation and Reaction agree with this effort.

The aim is to reduce infringements
Specifically, Ionas Nikolaou said that they are in favor of the revision of the penalties for traffic violations and consider it necessary for the penalties to become exemplary and to act preventively on traffic violations. The communication and the dialogue will be continuous with the aim of reducing the traffic violations, the traffic accidents and especially the fatal ones, the Minister concluded.
