Excessive optimism in the Cyprus issue is not justified, said the Mayor of Famagusta Alexis Galanos.

Mr. Galanos, accompanied by a delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta, was received by the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis and in his statements after the meeting said that "the President of the Republic informed us about the situation in the Cyprus issue today. We wanted to know where the issue of the priority of Famagusta is and especially the issue of the experts in the enclosed area, because it is a part of the city of Famagusta ".

He added that the President of the Republic is proceeding with the talks in good faith, but, he said, "Turkey has not given at all - and these are messages that we are receiving from elsewhere - samples of good will".

"On the one hand, our side is trying and exhausting room for goodwill. "Mr. Akinci appears to be positive and that he really wants a reunited Cyprus, but on the other hand Turkey and its allies in the occupied territories are moving in another direction to recognize or integrate the occupied territories," said Mr. Galanos.

He noted that this is a very difficult time, as "we are close to the end - not what the President told us, it is our conclusions that we discussed with the President of the Republic - the current US Government and the influence that can be practice until November. The same with the UN Secretary General, but (we are) also in front of a Europe which, unfortunately, is kneeling in front of Turkey because of the refugee ".

"Excessive optimism is not justified. "But it is justified that we are trying to keep the talks going and try to find pressure levers, because if there were no talks there is no doubt that what was done by the Turkish side will proceed faster," said the mayor of the occupied city.

Concluding, he said that the delegation of the Municipality expressed its support to the President of the Republic and his efforts.
