Cypriots are worried about unemployment in the EU

Citizens in Cyprus, at a rate of 78%, believe that unemployment is the first and main challenge that the European Union must face, according to the latest Eurobarometer on behalf of the European Parliament.

This is the highest rate in the EU, as on average, immigration and terrorism are the growing concerns of other European citizens.

Although migration has increased by 15% compared to 2013, only 38% of Cypriots believe it is the second challenge for the EU.

Regarding immigration, 81% of respondents in Cyprus were in favor of taking more decisions at European level.

75% view as a positive move EU financial assistance to the Member States facing the largest migratory flows on their coasts.

Fully in line with the view that legal immigration procedures should be the same in all EU Member States is 85%, while 77% note that these procedures should be simplified.

On the issue of asylum seekers, the views of Cypriots coincide with the views of the majority of European citizens, with 88% agreeing on their distribution among EU Member States and 91% on the distribution method under binding quotas.

Regarding the economic crisis, 61% of Cypriots believe that the EU Member States have acted unilaterally to deal with it, as opposed to 33% who believe that there has been a coordinated effort between the Member States.

Also, 44% expect a return to growth in the coming years, a rate that is 10% above the European average, while 36% estimate that the crisis will last for many years.

68% of Cypriots believe that the financial situation of their households has deteriorated in the last two years, compared to 40% of the EU average, while 23% say that it has not changed.
