The memories of the black morning of August 14, 2005, awoke again today, when the Boeing 737 of the airline Ilios, which was flying flight 522 from Larnaca to Prague, was never going to reach its destination.
For 121 souls the Sun went out forever. The same goes for hundreds of relatives and friends, who were never justified by the thousands of unanswered questions.
At the 12th memorial of the air tragedy that took place today in the church of Agios Georgios in Paralimni, the memories of that Sunday were revived. Sixteen souls from Paralimni were unjustly extinguished on the hill of Grammatikos. Two families were separated: the family of Christos Pyrillis and Antonis Antoniou, and with them the three members of the Koutsofta family, who disappeared leaving behind the then two-year-old Vassilis growing up with his grandparents.
The annual memorial service was held by the head of the Metropolitan of Constantia-Famagusta, Vassilios. The Government was represented by the Minister of Agriculture Nikos Kougialis. The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Ionas Nikolaou, also attended the laying of wreaths.
This was followed by a trishagio and the laying of wreaths at the graves of the victims, at the Paralimni cemetery.
Memorials were also performed in other temples of free Cyprus.
