Rehabilitation works in occupied Famagusta

The Technical Commission for Cultural Heritage, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have announced the signing of a project contract for the restoration of the Ravelin Bastion in occupied Famagusta.

According to a Press Release sent to the media on Monday by the UNDP, the maintenance work will last 11 months and the cost amounts to 564,238.00 euros. The work is fully funded by the European Union.

The restoration of the Ravelin Bastion, in front of the Land Gate, is the fourth UNDP project in occupied Famagusta since the Othello Tower, completed in July 2015. Work is also underway on the Martinego Bastion and the Venetian Walls section. .

Informative meetings will be held by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and the UNDP on the selected restoration methods and work plans.

In April 2014 and January 2015, a study was carried out in connection with the work of the Ravelin bastion with the aim of identifying the problems and developing plans for the restoration of the monument with internationally recognized maintenance standards.
The project will be done in two stages. The first concerns the restoration with the aim of dealing with the structural problems and includes improvement works and the second concerns the works for the usability of the space.
