A "thriller" has been unfolding in Kinaro for three days now, as the only inhabitant of the island is ignored.

A large operation has been set up to locate her, while a Navy helicopter flew over the island without result. Today, a Super Puma will be sent, which will transport forces to disembark on the island and search, but for now this has become impossible due to the strong winds in the Aegean.

It is noted that the Deputy Minister of National Defense, Alkiviadis Stefanis, on December 28 had visited Kinaro to wish the only resident of the island.

A few words about Kinaro and its importance

Kinaros is an islet of the Dodecanese and is located between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, west of Kalymnos and Leros and east of Amorgos.

Kinaros is part of the Natura 2000 Network together with the northern part of Amorgos and its neighbor Levitha. It is also an important bird protection area, as the island is a breeding ground for the Aegean Gull (Larus audouinii) and the Black-tailed Godwit (Falco eleonorae).

Archaeological remains have been found at the top of the island that testify to residential activity. There was probably a small settlement on the island during the heyday of the Commonwealth of Amorgos.

The island has had a permanent resident since 2000 and supplies with the necessary supplies arrive on the island by boat from Amorgos every week. Usually due to bad weather, there is no connection for one or more days.

It is recalled that on February 11, 2016, an Agusta Bell 212 helicopter codenamed "Pope November 28" of the Navy, in which 3 Greek naval officers were riding, crashed under unknown circumstances, in the early hours of Thursday, in the island of Linoaro, west of Kinaro. Shortly after 2.45 a.m. disappeared from the radar of the frigate of the Navy Nikiforos Fokas, on the slope of a steep area of Kinaros, at a distance of 40-50 meters from the top where the first wreckage of the helicopter was found, the bodies of two of the three pilots were found. They are the co-commander Lieutenant Konstantinos Pananas and the surface radar pilot flag bearer Eleftherios Evangelou. The body of Lieutenant Commander Anastasios Toulitsis was found a day later.

A large operation has been set up to locate her, while a Navy helicopter flew over the island without result. Today, a Super Puma will be sent, which will transport forces to disembark on the island and search, but for now this has become impossible due to the strong winds in the Aegean.
