Eleven people, including foreign tourists, were killed and about 20 others injured when a tour bus they were traveling in overturned while traveling to an archaeological site in Mexico's Caribbean Sea state of Quintana Roo, local authorities said.
“A tourist bus veered off course while traveling between El Cafetal and Mahahual. Eleven people were killed," the state authorities said in a statement, emphasizing to AFP that foreign tourists were among the victims.
The accident happened on the outskirts of the city of El Mahahual, 350km south of the seaside resort of Cancun, where many cruise ships dock. The victims "were passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship," according to the statement.
Authorities have not disclosed the nationalities of the foreign victims, but according to local media, Italian and Canadian nationals were among the passengers on the bus.
