More than 18.000 public employees are being laid off in Turkey by decree published today in the Government Gazette and thousands more have been made available.

Among them are many members of the class forces, but also teachers and academics.

A total of 18.632 people, including more than 9.000 police officers and 6.000 members of the armed forces, saw their names published in the decree, which was presented to the media as the last before the possible lifting of the state of emergency tomorrow Monday.

About 1.000 employees of the Ministry of Justice and 650 employees of the Ministry of Education are also being fired.

The decree appears to be the last to be issued under the state of emergency established the day after the failed coup attempt in July 2016 and has been continuously renewed ever since.

The current decree closes 12 associations, 3 newspapers and a television network.
