Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Washington to reverse its "illegal and provocative decision" on Jerusalem and urged world powers to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

He also called for speeding up the process of integrating Palestine into international agreements. Speaking to fellow Muslim leaders in Istanbul at an emergency Islamic summit in response to Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Erdogan also condemned the "violence shown by Israel", expressing his condolences to the "witnesses" who have fallen defending the state of Palestine.

Earlier Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu issued similar invitations to "all other countries".

"First, the Palestinian state must be recognized by all other countries, we must all fight together for this," Tsavousoglu said.

"We must encourage other countries to recognize the Palestinian state on the basis of its 1967 border with the capital of East Jerusalem."

Mahmoud Abbas: The biggest crime and a striking violation of international law

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas described Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital as a "gift to the Zionist movement," noting that extremists could use the move to turn a political struggle into a religious one.

Trump's controversial decision sparked protests in Muslim countries amid warnings from Ankara that the US move would throw the world "into an endless fire."

Abbas also said he would seek a UN Security Council resolution annulling Washington's decision on Jerusalem, calling it "the greatest crime" and a gross violation of international law.

"Jerusalem is and will always be the capital of Palestine," he said at an emergency meeting of Muslim leaders in Turkey, adding that the United States was giving Jerusalem as if it were an American city.
