Industrial accidents are common in China and have led to growing demands for better safety standards. The government says it has taken security measures. But while the number of workplace deaths in 2017 was reported to have fallen by more than 25% in 2016 - industrial deaths remain at least 29.000 a year to date.

Police say they have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the latest blast.

Chinese media reported that the blast occurred in an industrial area and that nearby damaged residential buildings were already empty due to the planned demolition.

Some local reports suggest that the gas bins could be to blame for the explosion.
Broken windows were reported in businesses up to 1 km away from the site of the explosion.
