Washington: Supreme Judge Anthony Kennedy resigns

The 81-year-old judge of the Supreme Court,  Anthony M. Kennedy announced his resignation giving it to President Donald Trump the opportunity to strengthen control in the Supreme Court.

The judge Kennedy wrote in a letter to the US President that his resignation will take effect on July 31.

The 81-year-old judge said he was leaving the court after more than 30 years. This is the second oldest judge in nine-member Supreme Court and was nominated by President Ronald Reagan beginning his term in 1988.

Republican nominee Anthony M. Kennedy has made landmark decisions on particularly important issues such as gun ownership, abortions, gay rights, campaign finance and voting rights.

Without Kennedy, the Supreme Court is divided into four Liberal judges, appointed by Democratic presidents, and 4 Conservatives, appointed by Republicans.

The reaction of the American President was immediate as he stated to the journalists that he will "move immediately" and will select someone from a list that includes 25 candidates.

"He's going to be just as great as him "Kennedy," Trump said.

The US President described Kennedy as "a great judge, with a great vision and a good heart".

 The White House sent a letter of thanks to the judge for his 30 years of service as a "tireless voice for individual rights."

 "His words have left an indelible mark not only on this generation but on the fabric of American history."
