Poland: 30-year-old woman dead after being denied an abortion

The extremely restrictive Polish law and its implications

Tens of thousands of women took to the streets in Poland on Friday to protest first victim of extremely restrictive abortion ban country, as they claim.

Nine months after the Constitutional Court upheld a law effectively banning abortions in the country, a woman died in hospital because doctors refused to have an abortion of an unviable fetus, expecting her to die naturally in her womb, which led to her death from septic shock.

Doctors removed her from the hospital, while supporters of the law say that the death of the 30-year-old woman is not related to the ban.

The NGOs called on the European Commission to implement immediately the mechanism that could result in Poland not receiving funding from Brussels because it does not respect "EU values".
