South Korean Samsung Electronics unveiled the long-awaited Galaxy Fold, a foldable device that creates a new class in "smart" mobile phones at an event in San Francisco. It is the first large company to launch such a product, throwing the "glove" at Apple and Chinese competitors.

The device works either as a compact smartphone with a 4,6-inch screen, or -when it unfolds- as a "tablet" with a 7,3-inch Infinity Flex screen. Fold will be available for LTE and 5G networks in the second quarter of 2019 in selected countries with a starting price of $ 1.980. Analysts are already wondering if the technologically innovative device (given its high cost) will be able to revitalize the declining international smartphone market.

"Today Samsung is writing the next chapter in the history of mobile innovation by changing everything possible on a smartphone. Galaxy Fold introduces a brand new category that provides new features, hitherto unknown, with our Infinity Flex display, "said DJ Koh, President and CEO of the IT & Mobile Communications Department of the company.

Samsung invented a new layer of polymer material and created a screen about 50% thinner than a standard smartphone screen. The new material makes the Galaxy Fold flexible and durable, designed to last. Galaxy Fold opens like a book and when closed it becomes flat and compact with one click. The user can "run" up to three active applications in parallel.

Samsung also unveiled a new series of four premium smartphones, the Galaxy S10, with the world's first Dynamic AMOLED display, longer battery life and better cameras. The Galaxy S10 Dynamic AMOLED display includes the first built-in ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that recognizes XNUMXD fingerprint contours - rather than a two-dimensional image - for greater protection against counterfeiting.

Also, for the first time in the S series, the Galaxy S10 has ultra-wide-angle lenses with a field of view of 123 degrees, which resembles the human eye. Furthermore, the new artificial intelligence software of the Galaxy S10 series automatically optimizes the battery, CPU, RAM, and even the temperature of the device, based on how the user uses his smartphone.

The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10 + and Galaxy S10e will be available in stores in Greece and online from March 8, while their pre-orders have just started.

Finally, Samsung announced a new line of Galaxy wearables worn on the body: the Galaxy Watch Active, the Galaxy Fit / Galaxy Fit-e (activity tracker) and the Galaxy Buds (wireless headphones).
