The Turkish National Assembly today elected former Prime Minister Binali Gildirim, a close associate of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as its new president, who helped implement the constitutional revision that abolished his position.

Gildirim, 62, was elected in the third round with 335 votes in favor out of a total of 600.

Binali Gildirim was the 27th and last Prime Minister of Turkey. This position was abolished with the implementation of the presidential system, immediately after the June 24 elections, which were won by Erdogan. Under the constitutional revision, all executive powers are now transferred to the country's president.

In parliament, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) does not have a majority on its own and should rely on the supremacists of the National Movement Party (MHP).
