The population of Cyprus has increased - the overall fertility rate is worrying

The total fertility rate last year was estimated at 1,3, at the same levels as in 2018 and lower than 2,10, a percentage necessary to ensure the replenishment of the population.

The population in the free areas of Cyprus increased by 1,4% on an annual basis at the end of 2019 and is estimated at 888.000, compared to 875.900 at the end of 2018, recording an increase of 1,4%.

 

However, according to the demographic statistics for 2019 released today by the Statistical Service, the total fertility rate last year was estimated at 1,3, at the same levels as in 2018 and lower than 2,10, a percentage necessary to ensure its replacement population. At the same time, there are indications that refer to an aging population.

Population
According to the Statistical Service, the population in the areas controlled by the State is estimated at 888.000 at the end of 2019, compared to 875.900 at the end of 2018, an increase of 1,4%.

However, indicative of the aging population is that the percentage of children under the age of 15 was estimated at 16,0% in 2019 and the percentage of older people aged 65 and over at 16,3%, compared to 22,3% and 11,3% respectively in 2000. "There was a gradual increase in the percentage of the elderly and a decrease in the percentage of children, indicative of the aging trend of the population," it said.

Fertility
In 2019 the number of births in state-controlled areas increased to 9.548 from 9.329 the previous year and the gross birth rate was estimated at 10,8 per 1.000 inhabitants. In 2019 the total fertility rate was estimated at 1,33 and remained at the same levels as the previous year. Overall fertility has declined gradually in recent years, from 2,50, the highest in 1982.

Since 1995, the overall fertility rate has been lower than 2,10 - a percentage needed to ensure population replenishment, according to the Statistical Service.

Moreover, as mentioned, the average age of the mother at the birth of her first child was 29,6 years, while the average age for all births in 2019, regardless of the order of birth of the children, was 31,2 years.

At 7,1 the gross mortality rate
According to the Statistical Service, the number of deaths in areas controlled by the State was 6.239 in 2019 compared to 5.768 in 2018. The gross mortality rate in 2019 increased to 7,1 deaths per 1.000 inhabitants, from 6,6 was in 2018.

Life expectancy at birth for 2019 was estimated at 80,1 years for men and 84,2 years for women, compared to 80,7 years for men and 84,6 years for women in 2018.

At the same time, infant mortality has reached very low levels and is estimated at 2,6 infant deaths per 1.000 births in 2019.

At 26.170 immigration in 2019
Based on the data, the net migration in Cyprus was positive from 1983 to 2011. During the period 2012-2015, negative net migration was observed, while from 2016 the net migration becomes positive again. In 2019 it was estimated at 8.797.

The number of immigrants to Cyprus (Cypriot repatriates and foreigners coming for settlement or temporary employment for more than 1 year) was 26.170 in 2019 from 23.442 in 2018.

According to the Statistical Service, the number of immigrants from Cyprus (Cypriots and foreigners who have stayed in Cyprus for at least a year) is estimated at 17.373 for 2019 compared to 15.340 in 2018.

Marriages and Divorces
The total number of marriages in 2019 increased to 14.854 from 13.783 last year. Ecclesiastical weddings increased from 3.918 in 2018 to 4.173 in 2019 and civil weddings increased from 9.865 in 2018 to 10.681 in 2019. As in previous years, a significant number of civil weddings were performed by non-residents of Cyprus. Specifically, out of the total of 10.681 civil marriages that took place, only 3.673 were marriages between residents of Cyprus. Thus the total number of marriages of the inhabitants of Cyprus amounted to 7.846.

As mentioned, in 2019 the number of divorces increased to 2.308, from 2.114 issued in 2018. The gross divorce rate was estimated at 2,62 per 1.000 inhabitants in 2019, compared to 2,43 in 2018.

The overall divorce rate, which shows the percentage of marriages expected to end in divorce, reached 361,7 per 1.000 marriages in 2019, up from 41,6 in 1980.
