Agricultural compensation of € 2,6 million

The payment of agricultural compensations amounting to € 2,6 million was approved today by the Council of Ministers, following a proposal by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. These compensations concern damages caused by downy mildew to the cultivation of vines and potatoes during the previous growing season.

Payment of compensation to beneficiaries is expected to begin immediately.

From March 2018 until today, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, emphasizing the increase of agricultural income, proceeded to grant thousands of farmers beneficiaries of direct and indirect aid, both from national and European resources. Specifically, thousands of affected farmers have been paid from purely national resources, in addition to € 12 million in compensation for damage caused by extreme weather events that hit our country. The effort made for the immediate payment of the compensations, is primarily aimed at relieving the affected farmers and their families from the loss of their income, while providing them with the possibility of reactivation in the primary production sector with the immediate improvement of the liquidity of agricultural enterprises.

In addition to compensation for the damage suffered by our farmers from extreme weather events, during the same period were also allocated about € 102 million from European and national resources in the implementation of measures and programs provided by the Common Agricultural Policy and aimed at upgrading it. agricultural sector in our country.

New background for risk management in the agricultural sector

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, having identified the weaknesses of the existing agricultural insurance system, recently proceeded to formulate a proposal for its complete restructuring, submitting to the House of Representatives a new, comprehensive legislative framework that will and will streamline the institution for the benefit of both our producers and our taxpayers. This proposal was formulated after extensive consultation with agricultural organizations.
