The number of admissions to public hospitals for patients with COVID19 is increasing daily, resulting in pressure on the health system.

The large number of new cases of the disease that have been recorded daily lately, translates into a continuous increase in imports, which are much more than discharges.

Speaking about the situation in the public hospitals, the Spokesperson of OKYPY, Charalambos Charilaou, stated that the days we are going through are difficult, while in the next period a further increase in hospitalizations is expected due to the large viral load that exists in the community.

As he noted, there is a large number of patients with other diseases and for this reason the cooperation with private hospitals was started to refer them there, as a measure of decongestion of public hospitals, so that they are ready to accept patients with COVID19.

As is well known, the pressure on the health system is an indicator of the decision to take action.

At this stage, the competent authorities are waiting to see how the result of the new measures that came into force yesterday will be translated, if they will be able to reduce the cases and consequently the hospitalizations.

According to Mr. Charilaou, another issue that complicates the situation is the fact that many hospital staff are absent on leave due to summer.

It is worth noting that yesterday in a wide-ranging meeting initiated by the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY), it was decided to provide incentives to nurses and medical staff for emergency staffing of Covid Clinics in public hospitals, in an effort not to revoke licenses but to ensure high staffing and shift coverage.

A total of 231 patients with COVID19 are currently being treated.
