Sizopoulos: "To remove the Cypriot issue from MOE"

What does it mean for Turkey to try to bring Tympus airport under its absolute control?

The need to remove the negotiations on the Cyprus issue from the MOE and the discussions of a bi-communal nature was pointed out in his statements to the media today by the President of EDEK, Marinos Sizopoulos. He stressed, however, that "Turkey's energy, to try to bring the Tympus airport under its absolute control, confirms the firm position of EDEK that the airport should not be included in the framework of the MOE in any way".

Mr. Sizopoulos made statements after the meeting with the new negotiator for the Cyprus issue, Menelaos Menelaou. According to the President of EDEK, the developments at the illegal airport of Tympos were discussed in the meeting with Mr. Menelaou, among others.

As Mr. Sizopoulos explained, with the inclusion of the airport in the MOE, there is a question of "direct or indirect assignment of airspace control rights, even to a small extent", which, as he said, is in fact a form of sovereign rights and this is "A step towards what Turkey is trying to ensure, sovereign equality."

Answering a question, he said that the negotiation should be moved away from the level of the CUs, as well as from the level of the bi-communal character. "The Cyprus issue is not a matter of resolving bi-communal problems. It is an international issue, the opponent is not the Turkish Cypriots, but Turkey. We must highlight this element in the greatest possible extent and intensity. "Today, the conditions are conducive to exploitation in this direction," he said.

He explained that, on the occasion of the crisis in Ukraine, "the Cyprus issue should return to its proper basis, as an issue of invasion, continued occupation and ethnic cleansing through illegal Turkish settlement" and pointed out that Cyprus should demand the convening of an international conference on Cyprus issue, "with the main goal of discussing as a matter of priority the international aspect, ie the complete withdrawal of Turkish troops, the abolition of guarantees and the repatriation of settlers."

He appealed to the government to withdraw the MOEs, given that so far, as many times as anything was agreed on the basis of the MOEs, only the part concerning our side has been implemented, as he said. He pointed out that, through the recent actions for the airport of Tympos, "the Turkish side, and the Turkish Cypriot led by Ankara, are trying to exert pressure and blackmail on the Cypriot government, so that they can reap more political benefits and profits".

Asked about a meeting with Italian MP Piero Fossi next week on the Famagusta issue, he said he would point to the fact that Turkey systematically violates international law, UN resolutions, but unfortunately has not no sanctions, neither by the UN, nor by other countries. "It is not possible for Russia to automatically impose sanctions for invading Ukraine, but in the case of Turkey, which has occupied European territory for 48 years and is trying to settle illegally, not only will it not be subject to the same sanctions, but it will be treated favorably by "our partners in the EU and beyond," he concluded.
