The 20th day of the quarantine of 75 thousand (and not only) people in Cyprus

People are hiding behind the numbers. Next door, our family who were "hit" by the virus

People are hiding behind the numbers. Next door, our family who were "struck" by the virus, in this fierce new wave of the pandemic. The Omicron mutation is spreading like wildfire both in Cyprus and in the rest of the world.

Restrictive measures continue to accompany our daily lives, which for many has been overturned again despite the restrictions that apply. Many of our fellow human beings have been in quarantine for days now after being identified as positive and many others who are close contacts also remain in partial restraint.

This January may not be like last year, where he found us in a lockdown for a period of about 3 weeks, but it does not matter much if one takes into account that many are in a "peculiar" lockdown either due to teleworking or quarantine. The whole equation, however, does not lack the cases of concealment of close contacts as well as failure to follow the instructions provided for testing.

The indicators may show a partial decrease, but the daily cases and much more the positivity index and the hospitalizations do not allow complacency.

Some epidemiologists have even suggested that we have not yet seen a 100% prevalence of Omicron, so it is too early to make estimates for de-escalation or even for the easing of restrictions.

This week will also reflect the situation in the schools which, despite the voices and protests, opened and like the rest of society, they also record daily cases.

From December 27 until yesterday, January 16, Cyprus records four-digit numbers in the daily epidemiological bulletin. The record of loss of human lives is also black, since 53 deaths were recorded during this period. During this period, about 75 thousand cases were recorded (74968 specifically). These individuals were quarantined and with them hundreds of other people who were in close contact. This number changes daily, but remains at high levels as hundreds of new cases are detected daily.

The positivity index has decreased but has not fallen below 2%.

270 of our fellow human beings are being treated in state hospitals, a number that in no way inspires optimism at a time when many of these 270 people are fighting for their lives in the Intensive Care Units.
