For the new variant of coronavirus that he identified in samples of positive cases from the Cypriot community, the team of the professor of the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Cyprus, dr. Leontiou Kostrikis, referred to in his statements the Minister of Health, Michalis Hatzipandelas.

Speaking yesterday at Sections in Facts, Dr. Kostrikis said that this is the Deltacron mutation which has been identified in 25 cases and it seems that the strains have a genetic background of the Delta mutation.

Asked to comment on whether these findings are of concern, the Undersecretary replied that the Ministry was aware of the specific cases. As he said, "we do not think it is something to worry about at the moment, but we should be proud of the scientists we have in our country because the results we had from Dr. Kostriki, they are pioneers and they put our country on the world map in terms of health issues ".

"Since it is a combination of two mutations that already exist in our country, it is not something to worry about," he stressed.

As Dr. said yesterday in SIGMA. Kostrikis, "we find a significant number of variants that have been identified only in Omicron which has differences from other strains because its genome has 30 different variants. Of these, 10 variants of Omicron were identified in the incidents we identified in Cyprus. There is international interest… ".
