The first official visit of the President of Egypt to Cyprus today and the holding of the fifth tripartite meeting Cyprus - Greece - Egypt tomorrow, is a tangible proof of the upgrading and further deepening of the Nicosia - Cairo relations, said President Anastasiadis.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, President Anastasiadis stressed that during today's consultations, it was agreed that the discovery of hydrocarbons offers a unique opportunity to strengthen joint actions, in order to achieve the desired results. benefit of the peoples of the two countries.
President Anastasiadis noted that the cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Egypt is based on the principles of international law and the law of the sea.
The vision, he told us, is for hydrocarbons to become a catalyst, contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the wider region.
He also stressed that during the meeting with Mr. Sisi, it was decided to establish a mechanism for holding annual meetings to monitor the implementation of the agreements.
President Anastasiadis assured Mr. Sisi that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to actively support the strengthening of EU-Egypt relations.
At the same time, he noted that he informed the President of Egypt about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and in particular about the reasons that did not allow a positive result to be achieved in Crans Montana.
Unfortunately, he said, Turkey's insistence on maintaining guarantee and invasive rights and the permanent presence of troops led the conference to failure.
President Anastasiadis expressed gratitude and appreciation for Egypt's long-standing support for efforts to end the unacceptable situation in Cyprus.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described the discovery of natural gas reserves in the region as very important, adding that Egypt supports the right of Cyprus to exploit its natural resources, in the framework of the agreements it has signed with Egypt.
The Egyptian President stressed the importance of the trilateral cooperation Cyprus - Greece - Egypt for the strengthening of relations between the three countries in various fields, adding that he looks forward to tomorrow's trilateral meeting with the participation of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Mr Sisi also referred to the convergence of the Egyptian forum, in the presence of President Anastasiadis, stressing that it would open new horizons between the two sides.
Referring to the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, the Egyptian president reiterated that Egypt supports the efforts of President Anastasiadis to resolve the Cyprus issue, based on a federation solution and United Nations resolutions.
He also stressed the need to strengthen security and stability in the region, pointing out that the destabilization of countries in the region has led to the rise of extremism and terrorism.
Mr Sisi also referred to the importance of defense and military co-operation the two countries signed in November 2015.
