An area full of surprises!
Byzantine Town
On a coastline that stretches for more than two kilometers, with enchanting beaches and pristine blue waters, which starts from the beach of Agia Thekla and ends on the east bank of the Liopetri River, is Sotira, one of the largest coastal towns in the free province. Famagusta with a population of 5.500 inhabitants. Here, in this picturesque community, one can find traditional buildings, huge agricultural areas with the famous local vegetables, the potato and the courgette and of course the countless chapels for which the Savior is famous. It is no coincidence that it is called 'Byzantine Town', since some of the dozens of church monuments, hidden in the green, date back to the 12th century and are some of the most important church buildings in Cyprus.

New era
In recent years and after the transformation of Sotira from Community to Municipality, in 2011, its new Mayor, George Takkas and the Municipal Council, with new visions and plans, have contributed substantially to the vertical development of Sotira. In recent years, the Sotiras beach front has changed radically, while it has also achieved its vertical progress in the field of Culture, since in 2013 a cooperation agreement was signed with the THOK and the parallel transformation of the Sotiras Municipal Theater into a central stage of the THOK in the province of Famagusta.

Large excavation in progress
Great archaeological interest arises from parallel archaeological excavations currently being carried out in Sotira, with findings that are expected to be very important for the Cypriot history and heritage. The archeological dig of the Department of Antiquities headed by the Archaeological Officer of the Department of Antiquities, Anna Satraki, is conducting archeological excavations, west of the beach 'Sirenes', where a survey brought to light about 15 tombs, carved by human hand and geometrically on the rocks of the coast.

If you go Savior, you are saved!
Did you know that the village has a total of 17 churches, some of the churches in total, some from the 12th century AD? And it's not just pilgrimages. Visit all 3 museums: the Meletion, with traditional folklore, the Byzantine Ecclesiastical Museum, but also the EOKA Struggle Museum. And for a more relaxed phase, I suggest you a visit to Prime Microbrewery (www.primemicrobrewery.com/ 23826130), to taste excellent Cypriot beers. For food, I do not discuss it… meze at the Time Out Eating Award-winning tavern "Musician" (23828833).
