61% increase in tourist arrivals – The main reasons for travel

A significant increase, amounting to 61%, was recorded by the arrivals of visitors to Cyprus in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, as they increased from 244.705 to 393.893, according to data published on Tuesday by the Statistical Service.

The upward trend seen in the first two months of 2023 continued in March, with arrivals reaching 184.263 compared to 128.840 in March 2022, an increase of 43%.

The purpose of travel in March 2023 was vacation for 71,6% of visitors, visiting friends or relatives for 14,9% and business for 13,3%. Accordingly, for March 2022, 71,9% visited Cyprus for holidays, 16,3% to visit friends or relatives and 11,8% for business reasons.

Furthermore, in March 113.805 Cypriots traveled abroad, compared to 59.918 in March 2022, marking an increase of 89,9%.

The main countries from which Cypriots returned in March 2023 were Greece with 30,3% or 34.455, the United Kingdom with 14,4% or 16.386, Bulgaria with 4% or 4.527 and Italy with 3,5% or 3.959.

The purpose of travel of Cypriot residents in March 2023 was mainly vacations at a rate of 68,2%, while professional reasons accounted for 26,1%, studies for 4% and other reasons for 1,8%.
