The Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontidis is the world champion, for the second consecutive year, in the Laser category.

According to an announcement, at the track of Aarhus, Denmark, where in 2008 he was crowned Youth World Champion for the second time in a row, the 28-year-old sailor won the gold medal at the 2018 World Sailing Championship, defending the World Laser Championship at the .
In a medal race without margin of error, the Cypriot Olympian made an excellent regular fight, stayed close to Matthew Wearn and, finishing right behind him, sealed the lead with 59 penalty points, against 61b of the Australian. Third was the German Buhl.
Pavlos Kontidis entered the medal race with a four-point lead and just wanted to finish behind Wearn, which he did. He calmly managed the race even when Wearn escaped 2-3 places ahead and thus was crowned World Champion.
Through the race in Aarhus, Kontidis became the first Cypriot athlete to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
