Prisoners in Hell: The most inhumane prisons in the world

When confinement loses its punitive character and becomes a ruthless punishment

No prison is paradise, but here we will talk about real hells, where the human condition is deprived of even the basics.

At worst penitentiary establishments that man has ever thought to make reigns in chaos, terror and despair. Inmates stacked on top of each other in three-room spaces, with a complete lack of basic hygiene and the absence of medical staff. And this is the good news.

Because in fact the biggest enemy here is the others. Prisoners and prisoners who are set free to practice all their sadism against the weakest.

Physical integrity is at stake, amid an unbridled violence that reigns behind the towering walls.

Overcrowding, understaffing and inadequate living conditions are the least problems for the inmate in the most hardcore prisons on the planet.

There you have to confront her abuse of power and gang violence and endure stoic and even inhuman torture.

Imprisonment was abolished here, as the very condition of the penitentiary was irreparably circumvented.

Survival is a battle that everyone fights on their own. And if you get in here, you will hardly get out again…

Diyarbakir Prisons - Turkey

People got a taste of Turkish prisons from the "Midnight Express" (1978), only the cinema pale in front of the reality of prisons of Turkish Kurdistan.

Diyarbakir is notorious for its blatant human rights abuses, with torture of prisoners, children sentenced to life in prison and sewers overflowing in corridors and cells.

Turkey's largest security prison opened in 1980 and was transformed from the outset into an unspeakable hell for the region's Kurdish population.

Hundreds of inmates have been tortured to death in its fenced-in areas, and detainees have set themselves on fire as the only way to escape the savagery.

Behind the bars, the guards mercilessly punish any attempt at disobedience, while the episodes that confirm this are unfortunately endless. In Turkish they call it "the hell of Diyarbakir" and they are not wrong.

Former military prisons that have been turned into political and criminal ones, have not let go of their glorious barbaric past: daily and systematically torture, isolation, convicts roaming naked, some chained and others blindfolded.

Amidst all the tragedy, there are also complaints about the director's wolves, which according to his appetites grab people from the genitals.

The allegations made by Amnesty International go beyond any gloomy fantasy: prisoners are pushed by inmates into rape and torture on each other, in order to escape the other, systematic tortures.

More than 300 people have lost their lives since 1980 in this daily horror.

Turkey had stated in 2009 that it would close it. After the international outcry and his intervention European Court of Human Rights in May 2010, news stopped arriving from Diyarbakir.

However, the prison is functioning normally and the conditions are probably just as inhumane.

Takubu Prison - Paraguay

Why there are constant uprisings in Takubu, the international press once wondered about this awkward situation that is permanently in Paraguay. Because Takubu is perhaps the most dangerous prison in the world, even in the jungle of inhumane prisons in Latin America.

Suffice it to say for a start that inmates tend to look in the trash for food, as the kitchen can not prepare food for everyone. That is why the strange condition is allowed for their families to bring food to the inmates every day until 7:00 in the afternoon.

Hundreds of people go to jail every day and with them come many things that they should not.

Takumbu, which opened in 1956 in the capital Asuncion as a high-security store, is supposed to have a capacity of 800 nomads, but more than 3.000 are stacked here and left to their own devices.

Most sleep on the floor or wherever they find and living conditions are the least tragic. The few guards (international observers say 35-40) are trying to enforce the law in a shop where convicted murderers and rapists are stacked in the same cells with people just waiting for their trial.

The former director of Takubu, Jorge Fern μάλισταndez, had even stated unequivocally that "we do not have the appropriate means and infrastructure to manage the situation."

Reports want 18 people to die on average a year here and many of them just waiting for the trial their.

In addition to the mass hunger strikes, some convicts even go so far as to sew their mouths shut and be noticed. Boss here is violence and crime and it is tragically the unbearable hunger that breeds most of them.

Champagne Prison - Venezuela

The National Prison of Maracaibo in Venezuela went down in history as the most notorious prisons in Latin America. The situation is typical, unimaginable overcrowding, poor living conditions and mafia violence dominate everything. Except that Sampaneta still has a lot to tell.

The unwritten law states here that you will live according to your money. The poorest sleep outside. If you can give something, you will sleep on the floor of the cell. A little more will provide you with a hammock in the hallway. The beds are for the few and select. And this is all the luxury you will find here.

The very serious understaffing, even talking about one guard per 150 prisoners, has allowed the prison to take the law into its own hands. And so the crime prevailed.

In one such clearing of accounts in 1994, 108 inmates were shot dead, and the following year the total number of victims of violence rose to 200.

This situation prevailed for years. An international observer reported in 2012 that there were only eight inmates inside the store, with another 8 militiamen patrolling outside the prison. And so a few dozen died that year and another 32 in 69.

Inmates who can afford a respectable amount have όπλο here, in fact, a semi-legal situation, which violates as much as you can say the very concept of prison. But it is the only way to protect yourself from the gangs that are raiding the prison.

One of the most pressing problems is the complete lack of medical staff, which leaves the world truly at the mercy of fate. Even cholera has broken out in Sampaneta, claiming the lives of a few hundred more people.

Venezuela had promised in 2013 to close it and turn it into a museum. And indeed some of its wings locked it. However, it is not clear if and under what regime it operates today.

Mendoza Prison - Argentina

Another Latin American death factory houses some 2.000 inmates in facilities built for just 600. Mendoza is synonymous with death, horror and torture in Argentina. THE international Amnesty disgusted her in 2015, calling the conditions "cruel, inhuman, degrading".

Here, too, dangerous criminals are co-opting with people who have not even been tried, and the photographs of the hunger strikers' stitched mouths leave no room for doubt as to what exactly is happening in the infamous penitentiary.

Prisoners are an integral part of the problem, with the abuse of power reaching as far as food families. The complaints of the relatives of the detainees in international media all these years speak of horrible psychological and physical torture, even to minors.

In the whole stack of people, the cells do not have a toilet, forcing highly creative food solutions to defecate. Even the bath is done in a barrel in the hallway, which cumulatively makes life in the store unbearable.

This is also the case in the women's wing, where prisoners live with their children, resulting in the loss of human lives due to the lack of simple hygiene conditions. And of course there is no doctor in prison. As the saying goes, the only time a prisoner will meet medical staff is when he dies.

"The doctor is called only when the inmate dies," Amnesty International wrote in its report. Not that one signs the causes of death on the certificates. Relatives are still awaiting the findings of the 22 deaths that occurred in Mendoza between February 2004 and November 2005.

Who is in charge of Mendoza, wondered the Italian photographer Valerio Bispuri who managed to access the infamous No. 5 wing with his camera.

And he saw firsthand what was just a rumor: no prisoner entered the area where Argentina's 90 most dangerous criminals lived.

They just left the food outside the bars of the front door. How not to write the body of human rights IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) in its inspection that said "the place is not suitable for animals either".

Bang Quang Prison - Thailand

Just outside Bangkok there is another inhuman detention center. Some 6.000 men are being held here, many of them in complete isolation. Bang Quang has a punitive nature and the guards go too far to ensure the effectiveness of the system.

High security and the only prison for death row inmates in the country, whoever enters here spends the first quarter wearing handcuffs. If you are death row inmate, and 10% of the food is, your movement is further restricted with iron "bracelets" and legs. Until your execution.

Even malnutrition is predicted in Bang Quang. The only meal given once a day is a plate of rice with vegetables. The inmates are faced with the devastating consequences of chronic starvation and other hardships that the system has considered.

The prison, which opened in the 1930s, has no running water. And the sewer does not work, however, making the atmosphere unbearable. And the space full of mice. Bang Quang does not unjustly have a reputation for inhumane food abuse, she seeks it.

The inmates sarcastically call it the "Hilton of Bangkok". You separate the death row inmate from the shackles on his legs. Everyone else from malnutrition and forced labor. The guards they do not even recognize "mitigating", such as mental illness or age, torture will be suffered by all.

Torture that can even be insects in the little food. It is, as the locals typically say, the place where you enter to die. That is why it is also called the "Big Tiger", because of its ability to eat people.

Following the international outcry, the Thai authorities decided in 2012 to change the situation in Bangkok. And so they stopped killing the death row inmates with bullets, moving on to the more "modern" way of lethal injection.

Gitarama - Rwanda Prisons

The worst man ever incarcerated is in Rwanda. Which knows well from horrors. Even 25 years after the riots that led in the genocide that dissolved the country, horror remains alive in Gitarama prison.

The biggest problem here is the sick overcrowding, as 7.000 people are stacked in a space as big as a football field. As for the conditions, it is typically mentioned in a report of a charity organization that if they were cattle in Europe, the animal lovers would be in constant protest.

The inmates if they do not lose their lives to the savages beatings, meet death from starvation and communicable diseases. There are even creepy reports that prisoners, in order to survive, kill and feed on human flesh.

There is nothing human about Gitarama. The inmates sleep where they find, where there is a few inches of free space. It is also made to hold only 400-500 prisoners.

Testimonies of the detainees, as well as reports of charities, speak even of one dead person per 8 inmates. The miserable living conditions, but also the forced standing due to lack of space, plague the prison population in an unimaginable way.

Reports tell us that even 41% of the food suffers from gangrene and has been amputated mainly in the lower extremities. The only medical facility in the prison is a dysentery clinic. "Half a dozen people die here every day," he wrote in a report Red Cross.

As they typically say, Gitarama is not a prison. It is a tomb…
