Diyarbakir is notorious for its blatant human rights abuses, with torture of prisoners, children sentenced to life in prison and sewers overflowing in corridors and cells.
Turkey's largest security prison opened in 1980 and was transformed from the outset into an unspeakable hell for the region's Kurdish population.
Hundreds of inmates have been tortured to death in its fenced-in areas, and detainees have set themselves on fire as the only way to escape the savagery.
