October 4: World Animal Day

World Animal Day…

It was first celebrated in 1931 at a conference of environmentalists in Florence, as a way to raise awareness among the public and experts about endangered animals. Since then, the festival has expanded to include all kinds of animal kingdom.
October 4 has been established as World Animal Day because it coincides with the celebration of the memory of St. Francis of Assisi, which has been declared by the Catholic Church as the protector of animals and the environment.

On the occasion of World Animal Day, the president of the Larnaca-Famagusta Association for the Protection of Animals and Birds, Mr. Christos Karoulas, speaks to ant1ıwo about the vision and needs of the Association.

Mr. Karoulas states:

"THE ANIMAL & BIRD PROTECTION ASSOCIATION OF LARNACA FAMAGUSTA, was founded in 1991 with the aim of protecting and caring for animals as well as improving their living conditions.
Our target…
Raising public awareness on animal welfare issues and especially the homeless in the province of Larnaca and on the daily struggle, for the care and improvement of their living conditions.
It should be mentioned that the Association for the Protection of Animals and Birds of Larnaca - Famagusta, is responsible for the management of the Aradippou Stray Dog Shelter. The shelter has been operating since 2009 with the tireless efforts and care of our Association. Previously, the shelter was under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Aradippou.
The shelter succeeds and operates thanks to the love of our Association members and volunteers. It continues its operation based on contributions, the income from some animal welfare events and from the money that the members of the Association have - as much as they can. The assistance provided by the state, unfortunately, is very small. Therefore, the people in charge of the shelter and the Association, experience daily the anguish of the survival of the shelter but also the physical survival of the animals it hosts.
The Association appeals to the public to offer dog clothes and blankets for the winter months but also for financial contributions to cover the medical expenses of the animals. "Charity and hospitality are inextricably linked virtues, which reflect the level of culture of each country."
