Deepfakes: The new big problem after fake news and the position of Pornhub

Apart from the fake news, lately another very worrying phenomenon is flourishing, that of deepfakes

The fight against fake news is a very serious issue that has occupied the big companies in the Internet in recent months and of course we users who are tired of seeing bullshit, which spread, deceive and shape public opinion with very dangerous consequences. But apart from the fake news, there has been another very worrying phenomenon lately, that of deepfakes.

What are deepfakes

The term first appeared on Reddit a few weeks ago and referred to a thread where edited images of celebrities, mostly women, who engage in sexual acts were uploaded. The editing essentially places their face on pornographic images, videos and GIFs with great precision, so that the user thinks they are real.

From the earliest years of the Internet, it was common practice to post edited images that were supposed to depict celebrities in pornography, but it was a beacon that they were fake creations and users did not eat the pope (or ate him according to everyone's tastes). …). The problem today, however, is that artificial intelligence and editing programs have evolved to such an extent that almost anyone can place anyone's face in videos, photos, GIFs, etc.

Possible consequences

So think about what can happen in the coming months and fill it with headlines like "Leaked his Sex Tape like that" and the victim is looking to find his right. In a photo it may be a little easier to tell if it has been edited, but when we talk about video, people can more easily accept that it is real.

If such a video is released, we know very well that it is difficult to disappear and the worst thing is that there is no legal framework to cover the victim. We could say that the victim wants to delete the video because it violates his privacy, but if we think a little better, the acts he commits are not his!

Of course, behind these headings will be able to act cleverly to deceive users with malware, ransomware, cryptomining codes, etc.

How Pornhub reacted

The issue raises a lot of discussion, but at least we have the first (correct) reactions from the biggest pornographic networks in the world, such as Pornhub, which announced that it bans and deletes all deepfake videos that have been uploaded to its platform without their consent. protagonists in the same way that it blocks "revenge porn"

To put pornography aside, consider how much more disturbing things could be by appearing on someone's face in more serious cases, such as video surveillance - evidence of a crime. It could be an interesting script for a future episode of Black Mirror…
