As part of its international campaign for the salvation of the besieged city of Famagusta and the reunification of the Cyprus problem, AKEL in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot parties, the United Cyprus Party (BKP) and the New Cyprus Party (YKP) turned to foreign political forces for information. .

To date, 45 foreign parties have signed a Joint Declaration condemning Turkey's actions in Varos and supporting the Cypriot people's struggle for the reunification of their homeland.

The Joint Declaration as it stands:

"JOINT DECLARATION

We condemn Turkey's illegal actions in Varos

The urgent need to resume talks

We remind you that the ongoing military occupation of Cyprus by Turkey for forty-seven years is unacceptable and we argue that it must end immediately. We express our full support and solidarity in the struggle of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, who seek the reunification of their state through the agreed basis for the solution of the bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, as described in the relevant Council of Europe. .

We condemn the escalating negative actions of Turkey against Cyprus, as expressed by the creation of new perpetrators in and around the island. The recent and escalating negative developments in Varosia, in the fenced area of Famagusta, are extremely worrying and we support all efforts aimed at overthrowing them. We emphasize that the Turkish provocations and illegal actions serve exclusively the permanent division of the Cypriots and their common homeland.

We condemn the unacceptable interventions of Turkey within the Turkish Cypriot community which aim at silencing the democratic positions of the Turkish Cypriot community, threatening their community existence, fostering the economic and cultural assimilation of the Turkish Cypriots and trying to silence government.

Regarding the issue of Varosia, we remind, among others:

    • The illegal occupation of the city of Famagusta since 1974, part of which has been fenced off and since then remains uninhabited and under the direct control of the Turkish army,
    • The basic principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, the 1979 High Level Agreement between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, as well as the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, in particular Resolutions 550 (1984). ) and 789 (1992),
    • The United Nations position that responsibility for the status quo in Varos belongs to Turkey, including responsibility for any attempt to change its status in violation of the 1979 High Level Agreement and its Resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992); United Nations Security Council,
    • The inclusion of Varosia among the areas that will be transferred under Greek Cypriot administration after the overall solution, in all the maps that had been entered in previous rounds of negotiations.
    • The Presidential Declaration of the UN Security Council of 23 July 2021, which condemns the recent announcement by the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot leaders of the further opening of the fenced-in part of Famagusta (Varos), calls for the immediate reversal of this course of action and the reversal of all steps taken for Varosha since October 2020. Together with the expression of frustration over these unilateral actions that run counter to previous Council resolutions and statements, the commitment to the agreed solution basis is reaffirmed.
    • The UN Security Council statement of 9 October 2019, which recalls the importance of the Varosha regime as set out in its previous resolutions and reiterates that no action can be taken that is not in line with those resolutions, as well as the statement of 9 October 2020, which deplores Turkey's unilateral action to "open" part of the region on 8 October 2020,
    • The decisions of international organizations calling on Turkey to transfer the fenced area of Famagusta to the United Nations in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and to refrain from actions that distort the demographic balance on the island through any policy of illegal settlement;
    • The statements of international organizations and states expressing their frustration with Ankara's unilateral decisions to "open" Varos, initially from October 8, 2020 and most recently from July 20, 2021,

Taking into account the urgency of the situation in Varosia and its enormous implications for the overall solution of the Cyprus problem, we demand,

    1. The immediate cessation of all condemnable unilateral actions that alter the temporary status quo in Varos in violation of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and that seek to prepare the region for its illegal settlement.
    2. The return to Varosia of their legal residents after the non-negotiable transfer of the fenced area under the control of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, as provided for in the aforementioned Resolutions.
    3. The end of all Turkish illegal actions that further increase tensions on and around the island, create new divisions and undermine the prospects for the resumption of direct and substantive negotiations, which are the only available way for the reunification of Cyprus and its people.
    4. The immediate resumption of substantive negotiations on the agreed basis for the solution of the bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with a single sovereignty, a single international legal personality and a single citizenship, with political equality between the two communities, as determined by the relevant Council Resolutions as well as from the point where they stopped in Crans Montana in 2017; therefore, on the basis of the 2014 Joint Declaration of the two leaders end of the Conference. The setbacks of the last four years have been counterproductive in terms of the resumption of negotiations and at the same time have led to an escalation of nationalism and chauvinism.

Concluding, at this extremely critical juncture for the future of Cyprus, we would like to reiterate our support to its people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots who continue to fight to bring peace to an island plagued by the ravages of war. to reduce any hegemonic interventions and reunite their country in order to bequeath to future generations a hopeful and prosperous future. ”
