The return of Famagusta could be a key that would facilitate the talks and would put the Cyprus issue on a healthier and more hopeful basis, said the President of the Citizens' Alliance, George Lillikas, in today's statements, after the meeting, at the Alliance offices, with the Famagusta Initiative team.
"In the meeting I had with the Famagusta Initiative group, I was given the opportunity to see the complete Proposal that this group has formed. "I believe that, indeed, today that we are in a stagnation in the Cyprus issue and with the tension that Turkey is cultivating, we could, with the initiatives of the Cypriot Government and the Parliament as a whole, bring the Proposal for the return of Famagusta back to the fore," he added.
According to Mr. Lillikas, there have been specific initiatives in the past in 2006 and later, where the EU itself had taken part in the formulation of a package that allowed the return of Famagusta.
"I believe that this could be an initiative aimed at creating better conditions and be seen as a practical step on the part of Turkey that it is ready to enter the talks in a spirit of compromise and consensus. The return of Famagusta could be a key, which would facilitate the talks and would put the Cyprus issue on a healthier and more hopeful basis. That is why we will support in our own way and as much as we can the initiative of the Famagusta people ", he concluded.
