The mayor of Ayia Napa, Giannis Karousos, is against the opening of the roadblock of Deryneia, who in his statements to "Politis 107.6", stated that "we cannot subsidize the tourism in the occupied areas through the roadblocks".
Mr. Karousos also added that the roadblocks were opened to facilitate the residents in an effort for the reunification of Cyprus. He added that "if one goes to Larnaca airport, one will see hundreds of T / C taxis which transport tourists to the occupied areas".
The mayor of Ayia Napa also noted that "we want to reunite Cyprus, to open Varosi, which is the natural capital of our region."
Giannis Karousos noted that he expresses personal positions and denied that he asked for such a thing from the President of the Republic.
Low quality tourists are no longer welcome
The goal of the Municipality of Ayia Napa is to clean the area from the riots and tourists of "low quality", the mayor of Ayia Napa told "Politis 107.6". Giannis Karousos also noted that only 8% of all tourists arriving in Cyprus is the one who discredits the area and provokes with his actions.
As he stated, "the Municipality has submitted an application for a permit for the installation of a closed monitoring circuit and we are waiting for the approval from the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection. If our application is accepted, we will be the first Municipality in Cyprus to have such a system. The goal is to make the area safe. "
Mr. Karousos noted that this is a recording system not monitoring as security is the first criterion for selecting a destination for tourists. He added that before the decision was made to install the closed circuit, all organized groups (restaurants, nightclub owners) in the area were asked.
At the same time, in his statements to the British Telegraph, Mr. Karousos stressed that low-quality tourists will no longer be welcome in Ayia Napa, as they damage the efforts made to make the region the most popular cosmopolitan tourist resort in the Mediterranean.
