Mobile phone antennas in Deryneia: What does the Ministry of Health answer?

The Minister of Health, Konstantinos Ioannou, is reassuring, regarding the concerns expressed by residents of the remote Deryneia, about the increased cases of cancer, in combination with the operation of mobile telephony antennas, which are installed within the boundaries of their municipality.

Answering a question jointly submitted by the Famagusta MPs Nikos Kettiros, Skevi Koukoumas and Christakis Tziovanis for parliamentary information purposes, K. Ioannou in a letter dated 14 January 2020, notes that the Health Monitoring Unit of the Existence of increased cases of cancer in the Municipality of Deryneia and how data from the Cyprus Cancer Archive were used for the investigation, as well as data regarding the population composition of the Municipality of Deryneia by the statistical service.

According to the findings of the research carried out applying the Pastidis Protocol, the incidence of cancer that occurred was less than expected and the difference is not statistically significant.

Specifically, while the expected incidence of cancer in Deryneia was estimated at 360 (195 men and 165 women), the corresponding incidence was 339 (161 men and 178 women).

Regarding the operating framework of the mobile telephony antennas, the operating licenses of the antennas, their conditions and the measurements that have been made so far regarding the observance of the antenna emission limits, the Minister of Health points out that for these issues competent The answer is the Electronic Communications Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
