The need to regulate the flow of immigrants/refugees on the basis of the economic possibilities and the geographical size of their first country of arrival was indicated by the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, in his intervention in a discussion on the immigration issue at a meeting of the European Committee of the Regions (ECtR) in Brussels, held on 10 April.

According to a statement from the Municipality of Deryneia, "the intervention of Mr. Karagiannis took place during the discussion of the issue of combating the illegal trafficking of immigrants and the role of local and regional authorities held in the competent Committee for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External affairs of the EEC".

As the Mayor of Deryneia mentioned, "the number of immigrants/refugees arriving in Cyprus via Lebanon has increased drastically in recent days due to the war in Palestine. Helpless migrants/refugees easily fall prey to traffickers, who often abandon them in the middle of the journey, as a result of which many of them, mainly women and children, end up impoverished in the reception areas, while many lose their lives at sea," he pointed out. .
