On Monday, the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulidis expressed his satisfaction for the support of the request of the Republic of Cyprus by EU member states regarding the start of the discussion on the reclassification of areas of Syria as safe, in his statements coming to an event of the Cyprus Youth Organization.

Asked when he will proceed with the appointment of a Deputy Minister of Immigration, the President of the Republic replied "immediately".

When asked about the next steps in immigration with regard to Syria, the President of the Republic said that he officially requested during the recent European Council the start of the discussion "so that some areas of Syria are designated as safe areas, in the database that they are safe areas and we know that certain areas are".

He also expressed "my satisfaction that a certain number of Member States supported our position", also noting that there was no backlash or negative position on this issue.

President Christodoulidis also reminded that on May 2 he will travel with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to Lebanon, which "was an initiative of the Republic of Cyprus".

It is, as he said, another development in the context of our holistic approach "to deal with this issue, and it is something that concerns us to a great extent".
