Famagusta District: Asylum seeker was driving drunk with a fake driver's license

Members of the Famagusta Traffic Police arrested a 39-year-old foreigner from India yesterday morning, who was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and with a fake driver's license, committing traffic offences.

Specifically, on 6/2/23 at 0930 in the morning, members of the Famagusta Traffic Police stopped for a check in Paralimni the vehicle driven by a 39-year-old foreigner from India seeking political asylum.

Tests carried out revealed that the 39-year-old was driving with a fake driver's license, no safety certificate, no registration plates, no seat belt and no brake lights.

From a further check carried out it was found that his application for political asylum was rejected while the appeal he submitted to the Administrative Court of International Protection on 21/12/22 had the same result and since then he is illegally in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

He was arrested and detained at the Ayia Napa Police Station and is expected to be brought before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni today.

The Paralimni Police Station is investigating.
