Famagusta District: "Heavy bell" to a kiosk owner for duty-free tobacco products

A fine of 90,000 euros was imposed yesterday on a kiosk owner, in whose possession members of the Police and the Customs Department found a total of 925 packs of cigarettes and 24 kilos of manufactured tobacco, all duty-free.

Around 10.00 on Wednesday morning, members of the Famagusta OPE, in collaboration with officials of the Larnaca - Famagusta Customs Department, conducted a search at a kiosk in the province of Famagusta, where they found part of the boxes of duty-free cigarettes and tobacco. A subsequent search of the kiosk's home's home turned up an additional number of duty-free cigarettes and tobacco boxes of various names.

The members of the Police and the Customs Department proceeded to arrest the owner and the person in charge of the kiosk, for examination purposes, while at the end of the examinations, the owner of the kiosk was issued an out-of-court fine of 90,000 euros.

After the owner of the kiosk paid the amount of 40,000 thousand euros, as part of the extrajudicial fine and after a settlement was made to repay the remaining fine in three monthly installments, the two of them were released.

Due to its competence, the Customs Department continues the examinations.
