Lake Paralimni is a very important migratory station for many migratory birds. In total in the area you can meet more than 100 species of birds. Depending on the season, in the Lake you will find various winged visitors or permanent residents, such as gulls, sea whistles, herons, reed warblers, snowmen, various small birds and much more. Surprising are the flamingos that come out in the winter in the area along with other species of birds.

In addition to birds, in the area you can find various species of reptiles and mammals, such as the Cypriot water snake, various species of bats, lizards, snakes, frogs and more. In order to protect some important species in the area, such as Pellokaterina and Nerofido, Lake Paralimni has been included in the European network of protected areas Natura 2000.

Sometimes, however, unfortunately the Lake "hosts" garbage dumps next to the birds, with washing machines, rubble, chairs, discarded cartridges from hunting trips in the area and much more.

As it is known, the Municipality of Paralimni took its name from the specific Lake, because it is "beside the lake".
