PARALIMNI: Student Conference on Peace Education (IMAGES)

The work of the 15th Student Conference of Secondary, Technical and Private Education Schools of Famagusta District, which took place on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at Xenion High School, was successfully completed.

The conference was attended by Paralimni High School, Kokkinohoria "Foti Pitta" High School, Paralimni Technical School and Xenion High School Private School. The general theme of the conference was "Education in a peaceful Cyprus of the future. Problems and Prospects.”

The conference was organized by Xenion High School. The Director of Secondary Education Dr. Kyprianos D. Louis placed the Conference under his auspices and Dr. Louis' greeting was addressed by the Religious Inspector Dr. Eliana Hatziioannou.

In the first part of the conference, students of the organizing school Xenion High School presented an artistic activity entitled "Letter to Tomorrow". The conference then functioned in four experiential workshops, in which students from both schools involved had the opportunity to collaborate, exchange views and draw conclusions on issues related to the general theme of the conference.

The parameters of the general theme, on the basis of which the laboratories operated, were the following:

  • Historical review of education in Cyprus 20th – 21st century. A critical look at the prospect of a reunified Cyprus. (Parameter of Lyceum Kokkinochoria “Foti Pitta”)
  • Education for peace. Fighting prejudice. (Parameter Xenion High School)
  • Cultural channels of communication in a peaceful Cyprus. (Paralimni High School Parameter)
  • Study of common culinary and religious traditions in the context of re-approach. (Paralimni Technical School parameter)

In the final phase of the conference, the findings of each experiential workshop were presented and so all the student-participants had the opportunity to be informed about the work of the other workshops and to ask questions.

The discussion was coordinated by Mr. Marios Epaminondas, Officer of the Office of European and International Affairs of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The students also had the opportunity to meet the Greek Cypriot Mr. Christakkos from Avgorou and the Turkish Cypriot Mr. Kemal from Galinoporni, who participated in the experiential workshop of the Paralimni High School. In the plenary session, during the announcement of the findings, all the delegates had the opportunity to meet Mr. Christakko and Mr. Kemal and to hear them play the pithkiaullin, sing together and chat in both languages, Greek and Turkish.

The great value and valuable resources that the students obtained from their participation were their involvement in the environment of a conference, the opportunity to exchange opinions and reflections, the team-collaborative approaches in the workshops, the cultivation of creative and critical thinking as well as exploratory learning.
