The "Ecological Schools" Program

The "Ecological Schools" Program is the most massive Environmental Education Program of the Ministry of Education that is successfully implemented in the schools of Cyprus. It started operating in 1997 with the participation of 16 primary schools and followed an upward course, as a result of which 139 primary schools, 95 kindergartens, 3 special schools, 41 high schools and 17 lyceums participate in the Program this year. The work done within the program is based on modern pedagogical and methodological principles for active learning, exploration and collaborative teaching. The benefits to the children participating in the Program are many and important and are not limited to cultivating students' environmental awareness, but extend to all areas of education. At the same time, children are exercised in democratic processes through the ecological committees they elect and the way decisions are made and implemented.
