It is becoming increasingly easy for young people to make the decision to emigrate, as a result of the problems they and their families face due to the economic crisis. This is the main conclusion of the study conducted by the Cyprus Institute of Statistics, on the intention of young people to immigrate after the collapse of the economy.

The survey was conducted on all young people aged 18-28 years and covered the whole of Cyprus, with a sample size of 856 people and the method of simple random stratified sampling. The information was collected through telephone interviews. The evaluation of the research results was done by the method of point estimation.

The president of KIS, Chrysanthos Savvidis, stated that the main object of the investigation was to investigate the question whether there is an intention to immigrate after the decision of the Eurogroup.

"The result of the survey was extremely discouraging and disappointing because 28% of the most productive population, ie people aged 18-28 in the country, express an intention to immigrate with the main purpose of vocational rehabilitation," he said. "A very high percentage if one considers that one in three is seriously considering leaving the country.

A percentage of immigration intention is recorded between the ages of 22-25 and reaches 34%. The lowest percentage of 23% is recorded in the ages 18-21. The explanation given (through supplementary questions) in this specific age range is that a large percentage attend higher and higher education schools ".

Immigration rates per city are:

CITY IMMIGRATION RATE
NICOSIA 27%
LIMASSOL 28%
LARNACA 29%
PAFOS 31%
FREE PER. FAMAGUSTA 33%

The third important finding, Mr. Savvidis observes, is that 62% of young people who express the intention to immigrate hold an undergraduate or postgraduate diploma. A really high percentage for a small country like Cyprus.

A fourth and very important element of the research is the countries that gather the greatest preference of Cypriot youth for possible migration in the hope of vocational rehabilitation.

COUNTRIES PERCENTAGES
ENGLAND 36%
DUBAI 15%
SWEDEN 14%
AUSTRALIA 10%
NETHERLANDS 9%
OTHER 16%

Finally, the survey showed that 79% of young people who intend to seek their future in other countries have no family responsibilities.

Cyprus is in danger of losing a significant part of its most productive population

In conclusion, the research of KIS, as stated by its president, Chrysanthos Savvidis, "shows that the percentages of immigration intention (after the decision of the Eurogroup) recorded among young people aged 18-28 can be characterized as very high and if no measures are taken for the real professional rehabilitation of our young people, then maybe our country will lose once and for all an important (in terms of knowledge) productive part of its population with catastrophic consequences for its economy ".
