The Municipality of Ayia Napa has recently submitted a candidacy for the title of European Youth Capital for the year 2020.

A written statement states that "the application was submitted to the European Youth Forum and the Municipality of Ayia Napa with the support of the Cyprus Youth Organization and the Ayia Napa Youth Council aims to become the first Cypriot Youth Capital of Europe".

It is added that "the theme chosen by the Municipality is" Thrive: Tourism Youth Innovation Europe "Prosperous: Tourism, Youth, Innovation, Europe. The rationale is that Ayia Napa, as a predominantly tourist city, attracting thousands of young people from European countries, wants to promote, through the institution of the European Youth Capital, cultural diversity, youth entrepreneurship by creating material and imaginary infrastructures that support the above purposes ".

According to the announcement, Mayor Giannis Karousos stated that "Ayia Napa is the most suitable for this purpose and calls on everyone to support the candidacy of the Municipality. He added that well-known cities such as Thessaloniki and Rotterdam have been designated as European Youth Capitals and through this institution have gained several advantages ".

He added that "Ayia Napa will do everything possible to win the candidacy as we have submitted a worthy proposal."
