A good news for the Greek Diaspora was announced today by the Turkish Minister of State who announced the return of the titles of the Galatas Urban School in Istanbul, to the administration of the homonymous Greek institution 23 years after its confiscation…

In particular, the Turkish Minister of State, in charge of European Affairs, Mr. Egemen Bagis,
states that on March 22, 2012, the first return of property took place under the law that came into force on August 27, 2011.

For years, the Greek community in Istanbul has been claiming about 1.000 properties that have been "illegally" transferred to the Turkish state. The return of the Galata School building to Fanari is considered symbolic, not only because it is the first practical return of significant property, but also because it is located next to the three historic temples of Galata occupied by the so-called Turkish Christians.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his deep satisfaction with this development. Speaking with former Prime Minister George Papandreou in Fanari, the Patriarch noted that "thanks to the courageous leadership of Mr. Erdogan, but also of his Government, we have breathed a sigh of relief on many issues. "Even yesterday, we took the title of ownership of a majestic building of the Primary School of Galata, which had been confiscated by the authorities".
