Nicosia: Nicosia remains "standing", which, despite the pressure from Britain and Espen Barth Aida to continue the familiarization / harmonization of the Turkish Cypriot community with the European acquis, has pointed out in every direction that this process is exclusively and in parallel with the conduct of direct negotiations for a final settlement of the Cyprus problem. According to the newspaper "Phileleftheros", the Cypriot Government also informed Brussels that the harmonization process cannot continue as long as the Turkish Cypriot side chooses to be outside the negotiating table for a solution to the Cyprus problem, with the result that the Commission does not proceed with a mission. , which was scheduled to arrive in Cyprus yesterday.

The same information states that Nicosia has pointed out that a possible continuation of the process of harmonization of the Turkish Cypriots, as long as they choose to be outside the bank of direct talks, would create impressions that reasonably refer to the upgrade of a separate entity in the occupied part of the island. Regardless of the prospect of resolving the Cyprus issue, it continues to harmonize with the acquis, with all that entails… Besides, the aim of the familiarization / harmonization process of the Turkish Cypriot community is exclusively to prepare for the adoption of the acquis, in case the Cyprus issue is resolved. And not the creation of an EU-harmonized structure in the occupied part of Cyprus.

It is noted that President Anastasiadis, who will meet tomorrow with the President of the Commission, had clarified to Juncker that the familiarity of the Turkish Cypriots with the acquis must go hand in hand with the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, before giving the green light to activate it. procedure in question. In fact, the President of the Commission himself, in a letter that we had revealed, dated 27 June 2016, had completely agreed with the positions of Anastasiadis, pointing out, among other things: "… the speed of the Commission's work (for the familiarization / harmonization of T / k) should go hand in hand with the speed and progress of the negotiations themselves (s.s. for a solution of the Cyprus problem) ".

However, Britain and Espen Barth Aida obviously have the opposite view. It is reported that London has repeatedly intervened in the EU since the end of 2016, asking the Commission to "speed up" the process of harmonization of the Turkish Cypriot community, despite the fact that the developments in the Cyprus issue did not justify such a move. Espen Barth Aida had also played a leading role in maintaining the process of familiarization / harmonization of the Turkish Cypriots, after the first shipwreck of Mont Peléran.

Now, the Norwegian diplomat is back and trying to put pressure on Nicosia to continue the process of harmonization of the Turkish Cypriots, ignoring not only the concerns of the Greek Cypriot side, but also the fact that (according to Mr. Aidakin himself) the one who left the table of direct negotiations. Mr. Aida, in statements to the newspaper "Politis", pointed out that "we should not exaggerate", adding that "the longer the preparations are delayed, the more likely the problems become in the implementation of a possible solution, if there is a return to the table". Mr. Aida characteristically stated: "Imagine, for example, reaching an agreement and not being able to remove the roadblocks because we have not applied the specifications at the (illegal) airport of Tympos", a position which shows that the he may not have "imagined" what would happen if the Turkish Cypriot side proceeded to complete its harmonization with the acquis without a solution to the Cyprus problem;
