IMF and EU misled the Greeks

"Now is the time for Greece to leave the euro," said Desmond Lachman, a professor at the American Enterprise Institute.

According to Lachman, the IMF and the EU have misled the Greeks, while the only realistic option for Greece is to leave the Eurozone and adopt the new drachma.

"After 5 years of deep recession in the Greek economy, it is easy to understand that the policies of the IMF and the EU for the salvation of Greece have failed," he said.

According to Lachman, "instead of the Greek economy stabilizing, as already envisaged in the first Memorandum, Greek GDP by the end of 2011 has shrunk to 16% from 2008 levels, while unemployment has risen from 7% to 21%."

The only opportunity for Greece, he continues, in order to break the vicious circle in which it has found itself, is to abandon the euro and adopt the new drachma. In this way, Greece will regain its lost competitiveness, avoiding years of painful recession.

The departure of Greece from the euro and the adoption of its new currency is not a panacea, the professor also emphasizes.
