The Famagusta T / C initiative blames leaders and the UN for the situation in the negotiations. It calls on everyone to behave responsibly.

The Famagusta Initiative proposes the announcement of the convergences and the opening of the process to the ordinary world, in a statement in which it records the responsibilities for the current impasse from both the e / k side and the t / c side, but also from the United Nations.

The Turkish Cypriot side, according to the Famagusta Initiative, has not presented any substantial formula that will satisfy the concerns of the Greek Cypriots in the area of guarantees and security. Despite reports from T / C leader Mustafa Akinci that the T / Cs are ready to change the current security framework, there has been no new position. The repetition of the old positions, it is noted, creates polarization between the communities and negative emotions in the Greek Cypriots.

It is also criticized that during the period of the descent of "Barbaros" the Turkish side preferred to use the threat of Turkey, which does not contribute to building trust between the communities, choosing polarization.

Regarding the e / k side, President Anastasiadis is criticized for having avoided commenting honestly on what is being discussed on the issue of political equality, especially on the issues of the rotating presidency and the effective participation of the Turkish Cypriots. As it is noted, Mr. Anastasiadis uses these issues as negotiating papers and as long as he reiterates his positions in public statements he limits himself and can not take decisive steps.

He also finds Anastasiadis' proposal for the negotiation methodology inadmissible, adding that it is not in line with the general framework of the Joint Announcement of 11 February 2014.

The United Nations is criticized for considering from the beginning realistic the bridging of Anastasiadis' proposal with the positions of the Turkish Cypriot side. The diplomacy of the successive meetings, which was chosen by the special advisor of the secretary general. UN Secretary-General Espen Barth Eide was not in the negotiation, and was doomed to fail. That is why the United Nations has a share of the responsibility for the current situation.

The Famagusta Initiative calls on leaders to record and publicly announce convergences so that the people can embrace the process and leaders understand how they can move forward, as well as express their commitment to the solution as it requires determination and will. It also supports bi-communal cooperation and bi-communal activities at every level.

The problem cannot be solved without its acceptance by the world. The United Nations must carry this message and take responsibility together with the two leaders to boost the talks. Leaders are still being urged to avoid the blame game as it has a negative impact on public opinion. Whatever the situation, leaders must act responsibly.
